The best welding respirator for most welders is the Miller LPR-100 Half Mask, S/M: Miller certifies it to NIOSH P100 under 42 CFR Part 84 and designed its low profile to fit under a welding helmet.
A welding respirator has to do two jobs: filter metal fume (a P100 particulate filter does) and fit under your helmet without breaking the seal. Everything below is a half mask or filter that buyers report fits under a hood. For powered air, see the PAPR welding helmets, and what a PAPR is if you're weighing one against a half mask.

Miller LPR-100 Half Mask, S/M
Miller · ML00894 · Under $60
NIOSH 42 CFR 84 P100 and built to fit under a helmet.
Miller's low-profile P100 half mask, NIOSH-certified under 42 CFR Part 84 and made to fit under a helmet.

Pros
NIOSH 42 CFR 84 P100, per Miller
Fits under most helmets; doesn't fog glasses, per buyers
Stainless and chromium: P100 plus good extraction; consider a PAPR for production work.
Solvent or paint fumes: a P100 alone won't stop organic vapours above nuisance level — use a combination cartridge.
Welding fume respirator filters: P100 vs pancake filters
The flat “pancake” filters on the Miller LPR-100 Half Mask, S/M and the 3M 2097 P100 Filters (2 pairs) are P100 particulate filters — 99.97% minimum efficiency, oil-proof. Their low profile is what lets them fit under a helmet; bulky cartridges usually don't.
Best respirator for welding: our verdict
Buy the Miller LPR-100 Half Mask, S/M if you want one purchase that just works under a helmet. If you already own a 3M facepiece, add 3M 2097 P100 Filters (2 pairs) filters. Either way, get fit-tested if you weld at work — OSHA requires it for tight-fitting respirators.
Disposable welding respirator picks
A disposable welding respirator is fine for occasional tacking. Look for a P100 rating and a valve. We couldn't verify the Honeywell SAF-T-Fit Plus P100 Disposable against NIOSH's list in our check, so confirm the approval number on the box before relying on it.
Welding fume mask vs a real respirator
A cloth or paper “welding fume mask” without a NIOSH approval isn't a respirator. Look for “NIOSH” and a TC approval number on the mask or box. For the GVS Elipse, retailers quote two different TC numbers, so check the pack.
3M welding respirator options
3M's half facepieces (6000, 6500, 7500 series) take its 2091 and 2097 P100 filters. The 3M 7502 Half Facepiece (M) is the medium silicone facepiece; 3M also sells 7501 (small) and 7503 (large).
Welding filter cartridges explained
“Welding filter” can mean a lens filter or a respirator filter. For respirators, P100 (magenta) stops fume particles; “nuisance OV” adds odour relief only. For lenses, see auto-darkening welding lenses.
