The best pipeliner hood is the original Fibre-Metal Pipeliner: Fibre-Metal designed it for pipe welding, and Lincoln's chart confirms both its variable and fixed 2x4C auto-darkening lenses fit it.
A pipeliner hood is a compact fiberglass bucket that reaches into the tight spaces around a pipe joint where a standard welding helmet won't. Read pancake hood vs standard helmet for when each style makes sense.

Hoods are shells. A pancake, sugar scoop or pipeliner hood protects only as well as the lens you put in it. Fit a lens or plate with an ANSI Z87.1 mark and a shade that meets OSHA's minimum for your process, and check the fit in our lens size finder.

Why pipeline welders use a pipeline welding hood
On a pipeline you weld all positions around a fixed joint, often with your head against the pipe. A pipeline welding hood is short enough to clear the pipe, light enough for long days and made of fiberglass that shrugs off spatter and rain. Most run a passive shade 10–11 plate for stick root and hot passes (OSHA's minimum for 160–250 A stick is 10). Inside a ditch or a dim shop, a small welding helmet light helps you find the joint before you strike.
What is a jolly rancher welding hood?
“Jolly rancher” welding hoods are square hoods sold in bright, candy-named colourways: Pipeliners Cloud sells a JOLLY square welding hood line and has said square hoods are now commonly called jolly ranchers, and retailers list them as “Jolly Ranchers Square Futura” hoods. So it names a square shape and a look, not a safety standard. We didn't find jolly rancher welding hoods on Amazon with manufacturer specs we could check, so none are ranked; if you buy one, fit an ANSI Z87.1 lens and see custom welding hoods for other ways to get the look.
Square welding hoods
Square welding hoods are the flat-sided hood shape behind the jolly rancher name — a squarer front than the rounded bucket of a classic pipeliner. Makers don't publish a standard size for them, so check the lens box before buying a lens. None of the square hoods we found on Amazon had checkable specs, so our pipeliner picks above are the rounded style.
Slimline welding hoods
“Slimline” is Outlaw Leather's name for its lighter, lower-profile hood with a slimmer built-in flip-up (per a retailer's description); other makers sell similar “slim cut” pipeliners with a narrower bottom. Outlaw Leather sells direct rather than on Amazon. The closest slimline welding hood we rank is the WELDTUBE Chopped Leather Top Lowpro, which has a 1 in low-profile bottom cut per its listing.
